We go an early start to avoid crowds at the Columbia Icefields. It was cold this morning but the sky was crystal clear. The temperature was 39 degrees as we drove. But it turned out to be a beautiful day with temperatures in the 70’s. It was a treat!
Our trip to the Columbia Ice fields was super and fun. We took a bus out to the staging grounds and boarded a snow mobile bus and headed out to the ice. We went down a 32 degree grade in the machine and onto the ice. We were able to walk around the glacier and see it under our feet. It was really cool and interesting. We also had to taste the mountain clear water. Did you know that the glaciers are still growing? It just takes snowflakes for a formation of glaciers. It is the compressing of snow over the years and there is more none melting snow than melting to grow a glacier. The impurities in the snowflakes give the glaciers up close the dirty look.
After the glacier walking we drove to Lake Louise and checked into our campground. Once set up we went downtown to the visitor’s center and got a lesson on mountain formation. Then we drove to Lake Louise (the lake) and the Fairmount. We walked around the Lake and checked out the hotel. It was a beautiful and relaxing environment. This evening we are relaxing and trying to decide what to do tomorrow.
