Day 11- Fort St. John, BC
We have made it to Fort St John, BC this afternoon. We had an interesting stop at Dawson Creek where the Alaskan Highway begins. We saw the exhibits of building the highway and a DVD of the building of the road. It is amazing that they did it in 8 months despite all the hardships and weather. We walked around the main streets and saw murals of the building of the highway. The town was closed down due to Canada day yesterday.
We motored to Ft. St. John with a side trip to the old highway and saw a wooden bridge at Kiskatinaw overlooking the Peace River. This is a total wooden bridge and is curved over the river span. It was really neat. There we meet a couple from Grace City, North Dakota. So we had a chat with them.
Ft. St John is in the Peace River valley which has farming, mining, oil and gas as their resources. It was also a fort for the RCMP in the late 1880’s. Our campgrounds are on Charlie Lake at the edge of town.
Tomorrow we will be going to Toad River which is a challenging part of the road. Over the years they have taken the curves out of the road but it is still road without guard rails and many animals are on it.
I am sure that the speed limits are 70 kilometers or less. It will be a long day. Please pray for our safety as we drive these roads. So far we have seen little wildlife- a dead moose and deer and one live deer!
