We are a nice drive today with many sightings of wild animals- bison, black bears, porcupine and moose. It was a beautiful drive with moderate hills and rivers. We were able to make it to Watson Lake by 1 and were able to spend the afternoon sighting seeing the area. We visited the visitor center and saw exhibits if the building of the Alaskan highway and an 18 minute movie. Then we walked around the sign post forest where there are a few thousands of signs posted a poles from all over the world. We were amazed at the number of German signs present.
We visited the Northern Lights show and exhibit to learn about the northern lights. It was good but we were looking forward to the reason for these lights. They never really answered them except it could be a reaction between electromagnetic forces and the atmosphere. The colors can be green with a combination of red and purple.
Then we drove out to the Watson Lake airport to see the exhibit about the use and building of the airstrip and its role played in WWII in the ferrying of aircraft to Russia. More than 8,000 airplanes were taken the northern route that started at Great Falls, Mt., Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Watson Lake, Whitehorse and Fairbanks. There was an airport before they had a road to town! Many of these planes were flown by WASP’s (women). They had great photos of the missions.
Tomorrow we are off to Whitehorse and will hang there for three days.
