Day 19- Top of the World Drive

Wow, wow! What a drive! We are glad that drive is over and one can say,” Did that once and it is enough”. We started the drive in the fog and was on the ferry by 7:40 Am. The ferry goes across the Yukon River and takes about 7 minutes. Then we climbed 4000 feet the next 5 miles and stayed there at that altitude tell we got to Chicken, Alaska. The view was beautiful and it seems like you can touch the clouds we were so high. Also we were above the tree line. The Yukon side was fair road with potholes but nothing like the US side. Mike describes the US side as a dirt road that has not seen a grader since it was built! The US road was very narrow since we passed a flag car guiding up a Holland America tour bus up the road! It was an adventure! It makes the fish camp road or the old Mexican road to John’s like a super highway! We are thankful that we were able to take our time and go slow. It took us 6 hours to go 180 miles! Mike did a great job driving! Thanks you Lord for safety.
Our stop in Chicken was like being back in the 1880’s except it has gas pumps and generators! The outdoor toilets were called Chicken Poop’s! It was the first sign of life in 130 miles. There is still some gold mining in the Chicken area today.
We are in Tok tonight at very nice campgrounds. In fact, we have entertainment tonight. The person singing tonight is the last songs of the frontier. Tomorrow we are heading to Fairbanks with a stop at North Pole to check out Santa for the grandkids. We will have to put in a good word for them at Santa’s workshop!
