We had an easy drive to Fairbanks today compared to the roads the past few days. We had some construction and frost heaves to deal with but overall it was a great road. The drive is only 4 hours from Tok. After I posted the blog last night, we went for a walk and ran into a caravan of retired military people from all over the US. We had a chat with them and learned about an organization that was formed by retired military who RVing all over (SMART). We had a nice talk with them and will have to check out the group. The campgrounds had live entertainment which was super. They were a bluegrass group that comprised of a retired vet and three teenagers. They were funny and talked about what it is like to live in Alaska during the weather. The campground also sold ice cream at the concert. I had huckleberry and Mike had mint chip ice cream. It was the first real ice cream we have had on the trip. It was out of this world!!
On our way into Fairbanks we made a side trip to North Pole. There we visited Santa’s home and gift shop. Of course Santa was working with the elves in his workshop and we were not able to have our pictures taken with him. We did see his reindeer and they were resting and eating! The entire town is decorated with candy canes and Christmas lights. The post office is where the Christmas letters come and go out which are delivered to Santa’s house.
Our campground is nice and our site is next to the river. So we are enjoying sitting in our chairs and watching the river float by! Tomorrow we have a King Salmon fishing trip planned.
PS for Tuesday- We went fishing and had no luck! The river was too muddy and fast. It was a good time on the water despite the clouds and scattered showers. We will have to try again. After the fishing we hit the commissary to buy groceries.
Tomorrow we are off to Barrow via airplane.
